Smashbox Cover Shot: Ablaze Palette | Review + Swatches

January 17, 2018

"Each of these slimline, portable palettes has a curated set of six shadows plus two double-sized base shades. They swipe on highly pigmented, beyond blendable color for endless eye looks. Smashbox popped in two the bigger base shades so you won’t run out of basics before you’ve used all the high-impact accent colors. You’ll be obsessed with the velvety, wearable quality of these shadows—not to mention the hot new eye looks they inspire.

Ablaze (hot, desert-inspired shades): With shades in rich red clay and hot terra cotta, this palette captures the warmth of the desert in a range of sun-drenched shades—these dimensional pigments are perfect for adding depth and contouring."

The Ablaze palette is available for $29 at Ulta, Sephora, and smashbox.com

First, let me say F**KIN' FINALLY!!! I've been dying for this palette since it launched! I saw it on Lex's channel. Smashbox had sent her the whole CoverShot Vault. As she showed each one Ablaze quickly became my favorite. I fell in love with the color Nirvana! I NEEDED this palette!

I am so excited about this palette! I love the colors so much! The shade nirvana is my favorite! I love the rose gold color, Siesta too! I wasn't into shimmer or glitter for the longest time but something happened to me in 2017 and I've fallen in love with shimmer shadow. And I'm so happy it did!

So let's really talk about this palette. The shadows them selfs are really soft. They go on smooth and have nice pigment. They aren't super rich in pigment but I like that. They have great one swipe color but all build really nicely. So you don't have to blend for days to get a more subtle color.

They build and blend beautifully. I love the colors so much. As I said before the shade Nirvana is my favorite. It's the shade that made me want this palette in the first place. I love the fall, maroon like colors!

The shimmer shades are gorgeous. The glitter is really fine and looks amazing. I definitely prefer shimmer that isn't chunky, which I have seen from some big brands. But the glitter here is perfect!

I really love this photo because I think it shows the colors best. I took it with direct sunlight reflecting off the built-in mirror. It really shows how beautiful the colors are. As I've said I love Nirvana the best. Let me take you through all of the shades really quick.

On the top, we have Relaxed, a matte pinky beige on the left, and Moccasin, a warm gold shimmer on the right.

From left to right on the bottom we have Siesta, a warm pink shimmer, Nirvana, a red rock shimmer, Delirious, a deep bronze shimmer, Torch, a warm orange shimmer, Throwback, a matte red clay, and Dark Horse, a deep earth brown.

My favorites are Nirvana, Siesta, Moccasin and Dark Horse. I really like them all but I think Torch is the one I'll use least if at all. I'm not really that into orange. But maybe I can use it with some brights for a summer color.

Next, let's talk about this amazing packaging.

How cool is this holographic photo! As you turn the palette you can see an exploding powder. All the Cover Shot palettes have them in different colors. I think it is such a cool little extra bit that mattes this palette stand out.

I wish the palette clipped shut rather than used a magnet but it seems pretty strong for now.

Alright I've made you wait long enough here are some swatches. Top 2 photos with sunlight from a window and bottom 2 with added flash. They are one swipe swatched with a loose brush. Swatched from Dark Horse to Siesta then Moccasin and Relaxed at the end.

Unsurprisingly on my very pale skin, Relaxed seemingly disappeared. I swatched them over Urban Decay Original Primer Potion. I left them on for about 20-40 minutes while shooting other photos. They stayed put and had no fallout. That could be attributed to the primer potion.

I also had no fallout of Nirvana and Siesta when I wore them on my eyes. I used my Porefessional Primer from Benefit that day on my eyes so again that could have been the reason.

They wore all day on my eyes and left no staining on my eyes or arm.

Was it worth the hype? Absolutely. I hyped it up a lot to myself and I was right to. I love this palette! I'll be using it more than any other eyeshadows for a long time!

Was it worth the price? I'd say yes. $29 for 8 shadows is awesome. The quality of shadows is wonderful and the sizes are great!

I love this palette and can't wait to make a ton of different looks with this! This palette is so pretty and it's 100% my new favorite!
