Delicious and Easy Crunchy Apple Crisp | Gluten Free Oat Topping | + Easily Vegan

May 21, 2020

Yesterday I realized my apples were starting to winkle and one was starting to get really soft. So I need to use them up quick! Apple Crisp is the perfect way to use up apples before they go bad and it's delicious! Personally, I think that apple crisp is better than apple pie. I just love that crunch of the topping!

So I know that people hate that bloggers have to pad out our recipe posts so they get picked up by Google so I'm going to try something new and put the recipe card here at the top and write my tips and things after. So feel free to grab the card below can come back for my tips later!

I am so happy I made this crisp! It brought some fall vibes into the house and smelled so amazing while cooking. Such a good treat that prepped in like 25 minutes! I actually tossed this in the oven alongside the roast last night and it came out perfect! My dad ate like half of it in one sitting. Last time I made it was Thanksgiving and I've realized that I need to make this way more often.

Apple crisp is so super easy and I like it way better than Apple pie. You don't have to fuss around with the pastry crust or worry about the bottom getting soggy. You just get a delicious crunchy top made of oats and brown sugar! You can literally just toss it in a pan and be done in less than an hour. You don't even have to pre-cook anything like you do with pie sometimes. The best recipes are the ones where you just sort of toss the ingredients into the bowl or pan or pot and just cook it.

This might be faster to make for some of you if you are faster at peeling apples than I am. I took a while. But on the plus side, I was able to add all the peels and cores to my compost! A Zero waste win! But yeah I'm a slow peeler so the 20 minutes could be a higher estimate than you will actually take.

The filling honestly looks so good by itself! The butter helps melt up all the sugars and get everything all mixed together. The cinnamon smell from this pan was soo good! I need a new cinnamon candle now! Hahaha. I had to use a cheap pan and the non-stick coating is coming off so I had to put down tinfoil but honestly, you don't need it or baking paper. One of the reasons I want to switch to ceramic bakeware is so I can cut the tinfoil and the baking paper out of my life. This method does make clean up easier tho.

I like to add extra oats on top of the whole thing so it's extra extra crunchy. And the butter seeping into the topping is what forms the crisp. And it's so easy to swap real butter for Earth Balance or another vegan butter. I try my best to make all my recipes easily vegan but this one was the easiest so far!

The top should like something like this before you cover it. Feel free to add even more oats! Personally, next time I'm going to slice the butter smaller and put it closer together so I get a more even butter coverage. Covering the pan helps the better spread a little as it melts. But remember to remove it so your topping can get crunchy!

I like to serve my Apple Crisp warm with vanilla bean ice cream. It's best if you eat it the same day you make it, if it sits overnight it starts to lose its crunch. And when you reheat it in the microwave it really loses it crunch. So if you do reheat, pop it in the oven for 5-10 minutes.

We art ours right after dinner and it was warm and crunchy! You might also want to to add some extra apples if your apples are small. Mine just covered the bottom and they shrink a tiny bit while cooking so they moved around the pan a little when I took them out of the oven. But a single layer just means it will cook faster! If you have a dish deeper than a standard cake pan and you add a lot more apples make sure you adjust the cooking time a little longer so the extra apples have time to cook.

Also, make sure that you are cooking this on the middle rack. If you cook them on the lower racks the bottom apples can burn before the top gets crunchy.

Let me know if you try this recipe! I adore it so much! It's such a wonderful little taste of fall! Let me know what you think!

Thanks so much for reading this post! I hope you enjoyed it! Please leave a like if you did, it's much appreciated!
